A Professor of Analytical and Environmental Chemistry from the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo State, Prof. Isiaka Amoo, has said plant seed chemicals were effective to fight and manage diabetes disease.

The don also recommended the production of chemicals as substitutes for imported raw materials.

Amoo stated this at the FUTA’s 82nd Inaugural Lecture which he delivered on the campus of the institution.

The lecture was titled: ‘ Plant Seed Chemical: Renewable Raw Materials for Industrial Applications,’

The don described plant seed chemicals are those chemicals that can be extracted and isolated from the plant seeds whose physiochemical and functional properties and other modifications determine their usefulness in chemical-related industries.

He pointed out that biodiesel can be produced abundantly from the extracted oil of snake gourds seeds, while chemicals from velvet bean, rice bean and lab bean seeds exhibited good anti-oxidant activities which can be used in the management of diabetes.

The former Head of Department of Chemistry in the institution implored government at all levels to provide adequate research funding to tertiary institutions and research institutes.

He noted that such government support would encourage ground-breaking and promote qualitative research works, advocating for collaboration among institutes, universities and industries for proper utilization of research findings and outputs.
