The people of Ogidi Community in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State have concluded arrangement to build a cultural centre in honour of their late illustrious son, Prof. Chinua Achebe.
The centre, when completed will bring people from all over the world to Ogidi for conferences and discussions about late Prof Achebe and other issues in remembrance of the literary legend and icon.
Rising from its first community meeting after 19 years at the Igwe’s palace at the weekend, the traditional ruler of the community, Igwe Alex Onyido (Ezechuamagha) said the motive was to immortalise the late son of the soil who made the community proud through his literary work.

“We want to develop a centre or a monument to be named after our illustrious son, Prof. Chinua Achebe. It will be an annual event so that every year, all roads will lead to Ogidi to attend the annual conference. Ogidi should move to the next level and should be placed on the world map. Prof Achebe is an international man and we should tap from his blessings and intellectual endowment. We should continue where he stopped, we will not allow his legacy and intellectual achievements to die. We want to immortalise him in Ogidi because he has brought fame and investment to Ogidi,” Onyido said.
He said he visited the family of Achebe in the United States recently where he told them about the new centre to be built and named after their late father, due to his contributions to the development of the community and placing the community on the world map.
The Igwe noted that the family welcomed the idea and commended the community for the gesture and promised to be part of the annual conference in memory of their father in Ogidi community.

According Igwe Onyido, “we are raising about N1 billion for developmental project in Ogidi, we has raised more than N20 million and I hope that by the end of the year we will raise up to N2 billion which will be used judiciously for Ogidi developmental programmes part of it will be used for the late Prof Achebe’s cultural centre and other projects such as roads, hospitals, skill acquisition and youths empowerment, security, education etc”.
The tradition ruler also stated that it will award governor Willie Obiano for his support fur throne and appointment of the illustrious sons of the community in his cabinet, saying that out of 21 Special Advisers and Assistants, Ogidi community have 10 SAs alone among other developmental projects in the community.

He further commended the community for their support since he assumed office last year as the new king of Ogidi after 19 years, saying that the community will continue to compete favorably with the communities in the state in terms of developmental projects. Anambra community/sd
