The Pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, Afenifere, has commended the South-West governors for promoting socio-economical and agricultural integration of the region.

In a statement on Tuesday by the National Publicity Secretary of the Group, Mr. Yinka Odumakin, the group especially commended the Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, saying that it was during his administration that Lagos State keyed into Oodua Investment to cement the oneness of the Yoruba nation.

“It is gratifying to note the sense of history of Ambode in remembering the role the Western Regional Government under Obafemi Awolowo played in the development of the West when cocoa was the mainstay by allowing the economic strength of Lagos to rob positively on other states in Yorubaland.

“Ambode has, on behalf of Lagos State, pledged to invest billions of naira to acquire vast land in Oyo, Osun, Ondo, Ekiti and Ogun states for modern, technologically-driven farming. Both raw and processed products from such farms would be brought back to Lagos for sale,” the statement read in part.

Afenifere lauded the communiqué issued at the end of a meeting held by the governors in Abeokuta, Ogun State, which proposed a joint task force to be set up to tackle insecurity and also harness the competitive advantage of the constituent states for sustainable regional development.

The group also commended the move by the governors to convene a regional agricultural summit in Ibadan, Oyo State, aimed at improving food security of the region, as well as the establishment of a Western Nigeria Export Development Initiative to drive the export potential of the region.

“It is equally salutary that the governors agreed that the artificial boundaries of states, religions and political affiliations would not be a barrier to regional development.

“We urge them to match these words with action in order to ensure that the Yoruba nation is restored to the right path of giant developmental strides,” Afenifere said.
