An 18-year-old security guard, Ames Mosoyi, was on Thursday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court over alleged possession of fake pounds sterling.

The accused, who resides in Oko-Oba, Agege, a Lagos suburb, is standing trial on two counts of fraud and unlawful possession of fake bank notes.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge.

But the Prosecutor, Sgt. Godwin Awase told court that the accused committed the offences on July 24 at Oke-Oba Bureau de Change, Agege.

He said the accused fraudulently obtained N46,000 from the complainant, Mr Seidu Dauda, in exchange for pounds sterling.

“The accused approached the complainant with 180 pieces of pounds sterling to buy.

“A few minutes after the accused had left, the complainant discovered that the notes are fake.

“The following week, the accused came with another 136 pieces of fake pounds sterling to sell and the complainant recognised him and called in the police,” he said.

According to the prosecutor, when his house was searched, 126 pieces of pounds Sterling and 13 pieces of dollars suspected to be fake were found.

The offences contravened Sections 314 and 372 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

Section 314 attracts 15 years jail term for fraud, while Section 372 prescribes seven years for unlawful possession of fake bank notes.

The Magistrate, Mr J.A. Adigun, granted bail to the accused in the sum of N50, 000 with two sureties.

Adigun said the sureties should be gainfully employed and should also show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

The case was adjourned until Aug. 30 for mention.
