The National Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party has proposed that the party’s Board of Trustees should take over its running anytime it has leadership crisis.
This was contained in the proposal for the constitutional amendment submitted to members of the party by the Chairman of its caretaker committee, Senator Ahmed Makarfi.
Under the “qualification for membership,” the proposal also said that the party must discard the minimum four years consecutive membership of the party before he could belong to the BoT.”
This proposal, it was gathered, was meant to prepare for the influential members of the opposition party that may later defect to the former ruling party.
On the take over of the party, the proposal further said, “In the event of leadership crisis at the national level, the BoT may assume responsibility for the running of the affairs of the party for a period not exceeding six months within which an elected leadership shall be out in place.”
It is believed that the party proposed this amendment to forestall a future occurrence of its recent experience which led to the 14-month crisis that the party passed through.
