No fewer than 60 suspected illegal miners in Minna, Niger State, have been apprehended by security operatives.
The security operatives included the Nigerian Army, the police and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence.
The security operatives were said to have stormed the mining sites on Wednesday when the illegal miners were preparing for the day’s business.
Northern City News gathered that on arrival at the Chanchaga mining site close to the Federal Government College, the operatives shot in the air, making the illegal miners to scamper for safety but they were rounded up.
It was learnt that the suspects were packed into four pick-up vans which the security operatives brought for the operation.
They were reportedly taken to the army barracks in the state capital where they were detained.
The Niger State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Muhammad Abubakar, when contacted, confirmed the incident, noting that the suspects were arrested for “illegal mining.”
Abubakar said security operatives in the state also discovered that some of the illegal miners were always in possession of weapons, thus constituting security risks to the people.
The police spokesman said the suspects would be arraigned in court at the end of investigations.
