The Niger State Police Command has arrested nine suspected kidnappers and cattle rustlers that had been terrorising Manigi market in Mashegu and Bangi communities in the Mariga Local Government Areas of the state.
The suspected kidnappers – Ahumadu Abubakar, 30; Ali Shehu, 30; and Abubakar Mohammed, 21 – were trailed and arrested by police operatives attached to the Mashegu Police Division.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, Muhammad Abubakar, told Northern City News on Thursday that police operatives apprehended the suspects based on a tip-off.
Abubakar disclosed that the suspects kidnapped one Sanusi Garba, from Manigi market in Mashegu Council in his unregistered Toyota Corolla and took him into the bush where they robbed him of N7.6m.
According to him, the suspects later received N10m as ransom before releasing their victim.
The police spokesman said the unregistered Toyota Corolla car belonging to the victim was recovered during the operation.
He said the command’s Special Anti-Kidnapping Squad also arrested Tabana Adamu, 37, of Ungwan Mallam Fulani Camp and Manu Farida, 23, of Bangi in Mariga Local Government Area of the state.
He said the suspects were among a six-man gang that kidnapped one Alhaji Duna of Bori Aiki village of Mashegu Local Government Area and collected the sum of N4m as ransom before his release.
Abubakar however said the matter would be charged to court on conclusion of investigations.
Speaking further he said the police also arrested four suspected cattle rustlers said to have been terrorising cattle owners and residents in Mashegu and Paikoro Local Government areas of Niger State respectively.
The suspects’ names were given as Abdullahi Mohammed, 34, Mohammed Umar, 32, Shadari Lawal, 32, and Umar Sanda, 23.
Abubakar said investigation was going on, adding that the suspects would be arraigned in court soon.
