The national wrestling team for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games returned to training on Thursday. The wrestlers boycotted training last week in protest against the non-payment of their camp allowances as well as for various competitions. One of the wrestlers, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told our correspondent that they decided to resume training not to jeopardise their chances of winning medals at the Games. The wrestlers said the Permanent Secretary of the sports ministry Olusade Adesola promised that they would received part of their allowances before the Games. “The ministry has yet to pay us our allowances but they have promised to pay us before we leave for Australia. We have resumed training temporarily because we don’t want it to affect our performances in Australia,” the source said. President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation Daniel Igali could not be reached for comments as calls to his mobile line did not go through.
