Peter Henry is a rising rap artiste from Kaduna State. The journalist and creative entrepreneur with stage name, ‘LEARN’, shares his music and bag-making story with the Daily Trust YOUTHVILLE in this interview.
What’s the story behind your musical career?
I have been doing music for the past 14 years, mostly conscious Rap. Lest I forget, I’m a journalist. My story is that of an individual struggle. I had to learn almost everything from my mum or through the hard way because my Dad wasn’t around. I can truly relate to almost every challenge in the project, and that’s the primary reason why I want to make a difference. I just have to impact everyone around me by God’s grace.
Could you describe a typical work day for you?
I’m always in the studio recording, or in my work place making bags. Sometimes, I hook up with my blogger, Kel Cypha (Krockcity Degreez Blog) to learn a bit on blogging.
As a young artiste, what challenges do you face in getting the job done?
As an artiste, there is always this need to have a well organise team, consisting of a graphics designer, blogger. P.R. etc. Sincerely, I have trouble with team work, and I’ve asked if there is a way I could improve. Recently, I’ve signed up for a series of internal workshops and team building exercises, and it’s helping.
What projects are you currently working on?
I’m presently working on an E.P. named ‘Doing the Industry A Favour.’ Hopefully, I’m dropping it early next year.
What extra-curricular activity do you engage yourself in?
I make good varieties of bags @HenryHothBags. I read and watch movies as well.
What are the platforms you are creating to empower others?
Being a rapper is my passion, but since 2013 I’d like to say that I’ve added other aspect of works to my skill set. Among such skills is the bag making I earlier stated. All through the past five years, I’ve use that medium to coach people, and by that empowering them.
What is your current membership strength?
A bit more than average; I’m mostly coaching youngsters. I have like 6 people working with me presently.
How do you source your fund and what do you use it for?
Musically, there is none. I’m a work in progress. Hopefully, but thank God for the bag making business. This have always helped with my songs recordings and promotions.
What are your plans for expansion in the next few years?
For now, looking for a record deals is paramount. If I don’t have a label then I plan to monetize my old and new project (Doing The Industry A Favour). I heard there are sites that streaming is rewarding.
What is your advice to the Nigerian youth?
There’s always a chance for a determined soul. Primarily, determination is the keyword in this forum. To every youth employed or unemployed out there, define your purpose, build up your strategies and work very hard in achieving them. The world is out there, go and conquer.
