The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps, Brig Gen Suleman Kazaure, on Monday met with Maj Gen Fidelis Azinta, the General Officer Commanding, 2 Division, Nigerian Army, Ibadan, and the Director of Department of State Services in Oyo State, Mr Abel Achi, to seek protection for corps members who will participate in the forthcoming general elections.
Kazaure, who was was accompanied by the NYSC Director of Special Duties, Mr Hilary Nasamu, and other top officials of the corps, said he was on a sensitisation tour of the corps locations ahead of the elections.
He said, “The elections are near and some corps members will work as INEC ad hoc workers. We want to ensure that they are adequately protected both during and after the elections.”
He said the corps members would not be deployed in areas that are not safe.
The GOC assured the NYSC chief that the army would ensure the safety of the corps members participating in the elections.
Azinta said, “We will also ensure that the elections are violent-free. So, people should not fear, they should come out and vote because there will be peace.”
He urged the NYSC to meet with traditional rulers, representatives of political parties and other relevant stakeholders about the safety of corps members for the polls.
