The Arewa Community in Lagos State, an umbrella body of Hausas living in Lagos, on Wednesday declared support for the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the state, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
Ahead of the March 2, 2019 governorship election, the Hausa community endorsed Sanwo-Olu at a rally on Wednesday at the National Stadium, Surulere.
In a chat with The PUNCH, the Chairman, Arewa Community in Lagos State, Alhaji Muhammadu Dandamayabo, said it was natural for the Hausa community to back Sanwo-Olu, having been put forward by the APC national leader and former Lagos State governor, Bola Tinubu.
Dandamayabo said Tinubu had the loyalty of the Arewa community, noting that they had been following him since the days of the Alliance for Democracy.
Speaking in pidgin English on the sidelines of the rally, Dandamayabo said, “We, Arewa Community in Lagos State, it is not the first time, not the second time (that we have been supporting the APC). In 2011, we supported (Babatunde) Fashola; in 2015, we supported (Akinwunmi) Ambode and now, it is Sanwo-Olu.
“It is what Asiwaju (Bola Tinubu) says that we will do. We, members of the Arewa Community in Lagos State, are Asiwaju’s followers. Anywhere Asiwaju is, that is where we are. We have been following him since the days of the AD).”
As for the presidential election, Dandamayabo said President Muhammadu Buhari had their support.
He said, “Sai Baba is our father. We don’t reckon with Atiku (Abubakar). I am a Fulani, Buhari is a Fulani and Atiku is a Fulani as well; but we don’t reckon with Atiku. We are for Buhari. We will continue to pray for Asiwaju; he is a good national leader.”
Also speaking on behalf of the Almagated Union of Foodstuffs and Cattle Dealers of Nigeria, Shehu Usman, the Financial Secretary, Mile 12 International Market, said, “We are traders, but we are also politicians. This endorsement rally is very important because the man, Sanwo-Olu, deserves to be the next governor of Lagos State.”
