A38-year-old man, Mukaila Popoola, has been remanded in prison custody by an Osun State Magistrates’ Court sitting in Ile-Ife for failing to honour the N5,100 he bet on with a betting agency, BetKing.
Popoola was arraigned following a complaint by the agent of the betting company, Semiu Ayoola, who accused the suspect of refusing to honour the agreement after he had allowed him to place the bet.
The police prosecutor, Inspector Sunday Osanyintuyi, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Monday, February 4, 2019, opposite the Onimoba Hotel, Moore, Ile-Ife.
According to him, Popoola conducted himself in a manner likely to cause breach of public peace when he placed a bet of N5,100 with BetKing but refused to honour the deal.
Osanyintuyi said the offence contravened Section 249 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun State, 2002.
Though Popoola applied for bail, Magistrate Olukunle Owolawi, did not grant the application.
Owolawi subsequently adjourned sitting on the matter till February 8 for ruling on the bail application and ordered that the accused be remanded in the Ile-Ife Prison.
