No fewer than seven persons were, on Sunday, confirmed dead in a petrol-laden tanker explosion that occurred near the Anambra State Governor’s Lodge in Amawbia, near Awka, the state capital.
A source told our correspondent that Governor Willie Obiano was inside the lodge when the accident occurred.
The security post of the Governor’s Lodge was razed.
Scores of persons sustained varying degrees of injuries in the inferno, which began around 8.40pm on Saturday.
Several cars, houses and shops were burnt .
An eyewitness told our correspondent that the tanker was negotiating a bend at the Amawbia roundabout when it fell and burst into flames.
The eyewitness said, “Bystanders, mostly petty traders, started running for their dear lives, but a few of them were consumed by the fire. I saw no fewer than seven charred bodies.
“Several other wounded people were taken in a truck to nearby hospitals.”
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Haruna Mohammed, confirmed the accident.
He said, “So far, a total of seven people have been certified dead by medical doctors, while the only surviving victim was referred to the University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital.
“Consequently, out of the seven people confirmed dead, three were deposited in the Amaku General Hospital’s morgue; two in the Regina Caeli Hospital; and another two in the Piston Hospital’s morgue for post-mortem examination.
“The situation was brought under control and the obstruction cleared. Investigation is still ongoing.”
