Tragedy struck in Bauchi on Sunday when 13 people reportedly died in a motor accident around Bishi village along the Bauchi-Gombe Road.
It was learnt that the accident involved an 18-seater bus heading to Gombe, which had a head-on collision with another car. It was learnt that among the casualties were a man, his wife, two children and younger sister. The family members were said to be descendants of the traditional title holder of, ‘Yarin Bauchi’.
The cousin of the deceased man, Zainab Sabitu, who spoke to journalists on the accident, said the deceased were Jamal Ahmed Yari; his wife, Amina; his younger sister, Zahra’u Dogo; and their two children, Adnan and Affan. She said they were coming back to Bauchi from Gombe State when the accident occurred.
PUNCH Metro learnt that a funeral prayer had been held for them at the palace of the Emir of Bauchi, Alhaji Rilwanu Adamu, according to Islamic rites. The death of the five family members, our correspondent learnt, had thrown the palace and residents of the town into grief.
The Bauchi State Police Command confirmed the accident. The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Kamal Abubabakar, said in a statement that the accident occurred around 2.30pm, when a bus loaded with 13 passengers collided with another vehicle.
Abubabakar stated, “With a heavy heart, the Bauchi State Police Command regrets to inform the general public that there was a fatal motor vehicle accident today, Sunday, March 31, 2019, around 2.30pm along the Bauchi-Gombe Rroad involving two vehicles, a Sharon bus loaded with 13 passengers and a Toyota Camry loaded with six passengers.
“The accident occurred when the two vehicles were coming from opposite directions and on reaching a point on the road, they had a head-on collision; as a result all the 19 passengers from the two vehicles were injured.
“The victims were then moved from the scene by security agents, with the assistance of good Samaritans, to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital for treatment. Unfortunately, on reaching the hospital, 13 passengers were confirmed dead by the medical doctor, while six are still on admission.”
