The Chairman, Police Service Commission, Alhaji Muslim Smith, on Monday said police recruitment must be sustained to strengthened the force.
Smith, who spoke while monitoring the screening of candidates to be recruited into the force as constables at the Osun State Police Command headquarters in Osogbo, said the Nigeria Police Force lacked adequate manpower to properly police the country.
According to him, the force loses officers through accident, death and retirement on a monthly basis.
The former Inspector-General of Police said with an additional 10,000 constables, the force would be strengthened to perform better.
According to him, the commission places high premium on motivation for officers.
He said, “One of our priority areas is the welfare of the men. We have the police cooperative to help if they need money. We have Police Microfinance which has been helping both retired and serving police officers.
“There are a lot of programmes that we have to help our men and make sure that they are happy, because it is only somebody who is happy doing a job that will do it well. We are doing a lot and with the continued support of the government, we will get there,”
