Epia had honoured the police invitation over an alleged false publication concerning a former member of the House of Representatives from Lagos State, Mr Tony Nwulu, and his constituency projects.
The publisher was held at the Crime Office, National Assembly Complex where he was grilled for several hours.
Journalists who visited the office while he was being detained were not allowed in.
Epia was released on administrative bail around 2pm.
When contacted on the telephone, Epia said he was asked to appear before the police again on Monday.
Responding to a question on the condition for his release, he said, “A surety was provided. They insisted that they would not grant me bail, that I must bring a surety. They said their investigation will continue; in fact, I should show up on Monday.”
Epia however stated that Order Paper would not retract or apologise for the story on Nwulu.
“We will wait for the police on their investigations but we insist that our publication on Mr Nwulu was factual, correct and we stand by it. We also insist that he must substantiate the allegations of blackmail and extortion that he has levelled against us in the public domain,” he stated.
When contacted, the Divisional Police Officer, National Assembly Division, Mr Abdullahi Sambo, said he was not aware of the interrogation.
“I’m not aware of what is happening, I’m on the sickbed,” he said.
The DPO was one of the nine persons injured during the recent attack by members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, otherwise known as Shi’ites, on the National Assembly.
The police had in a letter dated July 26, 2019, invited Epia to appear before the National Assembly police unit on Tuesday, an invitation they said was based on their fact-finding over a complaint by Nwulu.
Order Paper had before the 2019 general elections published a report in which members of the House vying for governorship and deputy governorship positions were profiled.
The medium claimed to have reached out to Nwulu to account for the “missing funds and projects” for his constituency under the Zonal Intervention Projects in the 2016 budget, an allegation the lawmaker had allegedly yet to respond to.
Nwulu had rather attacked Order Paper via his Twitter handle, @tonynwulu.
He had tweeted, “Fake medium. No sensible person should take you guys seriously. Tribal bigots. At least, your faceless promoters should try running for office and effect the change they desire and not just being pathetic armchair critics hiding under a useless medium to extort.”
