The Minister of Transportation, Mr Rotimi Amaechi, has said the Federal Government will commence work on the Kano-Kaduna rail project soon.
Amaechi told reporters after visiting Governor Nasir El-Rufai at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim Government House, Kaduna, on Tuesday that the FG had secured a loan for the project.
The ex-Rivers State governor was in the state for a retreat organised for the management and staff of the Nigerian Institute for Transport Technology, Zaria.
He said the rail line would run to Lagos via Ibadan, conveying about 30 million tons of cargoes.
“Kaduna can also be a hub, which will grow the economy and also create job opportunities,” he said.
The minister in January 2017 said the FG had approved $1.2bn for the construction of the Kano-Kaduna standard gauge railway project.
He had said the government was negotiating with China EXIM Bank to finance the project.
Meanwhile, Amaechi praised El-Rufai for appointing youths and women to his cabinet.
He said, “Considering the northern background, you would not expect a high number of females to be appointed to help run the affairs of the state.”
