A 43-year old Abia State politician, Lawrence Ohaeri, was on Tuesday arraigned before Umuahia Magistrates’ Court for allegedly defiling a nine-year-old girl on September 18.
The incident allegedly took place in Umuahia North Local Government Area of the state.
The courtroom was filled to capacity when Ohaeri was arraigned.
The Federation of International Women Lawyers, and the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, who had their representatives in the courtroom, are seeking justice for the girl.
Magistrate Linda Ugboaja, who adjourned the case till October 17 and 18, 2019 for further hearing on the matter, remanded Ohaeri at the Umuahia Corrective Centre.
The victim’s elder sister told reporters that they were watching a film in the house when Ohaeri asked them to help sweep, adding that after they had finished the accused asked the victim to go somewhere to buy bread for him.
She said, “When my sister came back, he asked me to go and sweep a third room and he tried to pull off my sister’s pants, but she resisted.
“He grabbed my sister, forced her down, pulled off her pants and was on top of her when I hit him on the back, shouting. I quickly ran home to tell our father.”
Some residents of Ndume community believed the alleged rape was done for ritual purposes.
