AN 80-year-old woman, Mrs Iyadunni Ayodele, was allegedly killed on Wednesday by a commercial bus in Ajowa Akoko in the Akoko North-West Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The bus, with number plate KEF 202 XA, was said to be coming from the northern part of the country and was driven by one Shehu Mustapha.
According to a source, the bus, which was allegedly being driven in a reckless manner, hit the old woman and a commercial motorcyclist while the deceased was negotiating with a trader in the market in the town.
“The accident happened on Wednesday, which was a market day in the town; the driver lost control of the vehicle and first hit a commercial motorcycle, which was conveying two passengers, and later knocked down Mrs Iyaduni Ayodele, where she was in the market, being a market day in Ajowa, and she died on the spot,” the source stated.
He added that none of the three persons on the motorcycle died, but they sustained varying degrees of injury.
Confirming the crash, the Police Area Commander for Ikare Akoko, Mr Razak Rauf, said the vehicle had been impounded and investigation had commenced into the accident.
The Unit Commander, Ikare Akoko, Federal Road Safety Corps, Mr Yinka Akande, attributed the crash to recklessness on the part of the bus driver and lack of consideration for the residents of the town.
He reiterated that motorists needed to reduce their speed while driving through towns, because of schoolchildren and market activities.
