The All Progressives Congress in the North-East has asked the state chapters in Borno and Yobe states to agree on a consensus candidate to fill the vacant National Secretary position of the party.
The zone has also appointed the Senate President, Ahmed Lawan, as the Chairman of the APC North-East caucus and the party leader in the zone.
The decisions were reached at the meeting of the zonal executive committee held in Abuja on Monday.
The Zonal Secretary, Abubakar Ajiya, while answering a question, told journalists that the national secretary position was opened to Borno and Yobe states.
The seat became vacant after the swearing in of the last occupant, Mai Mala Buni, as the governor of Yobe State.
Ajiya said, “The post of the National Secretary was zoned to the North-East and further micro-zoned to Borno and Yobe states.
“What we have agreed today is that those states should go and discuss and agree on a consensus candidate which will be endorsed by the zonal caucus and forwarded to the National Working Committee.”
Reading a communiqué issued after the meeting, the Zonal Publicity Secretary, Iliyasu Habeeb, said the zone was in “total support of all the programmes and policies of the Federal Government, particularly the intervention programme of the North-East Development Commission.”
