An Ebonyi State Magistrates’ Court sitting in Abakaliki, on Friday, remanded in a correctional facility a 22-year-old man, Ejiofor Ekuma, for allegedly killing a motorcyclist.
It was learnt that the suspect and his friends barricaded a major road at the Ndiaguazu Enyibuchiri community in the Ikwo Local Government Area of the state with their motorcycles and tricycles, while fighting among themselves.
The victim, Mr Nwonu Ikechukwu, 45, while trying to pass through the road, was allegedly pounced upon by his attackers, who lifted him up and hit his head on the pavement.
He was said to have died on the spot.
It was gathered that the incident took place on December 30, 2019.
Ekuma was arraigned on two counts of murder and felony.
The police prosecutor, Inspector Chinedu Mbam, told the court that the offences were punishable under sections 324 and 319 (1) of the Criminal Code, Cap. 33, Vol. 1, Laws of Ebonyi State of Nigeria, 2009.
The counsel for the accused pleaded with the court to admit his client to bail, but the application was rejected.
Chief Magistrate Nnenna Onuoha said it was not within the jurisdiction of the court to entertain the matter.
Onuoha directed that the suspect be remanded in the Nigerian Correctional Centre, Abakaliki, and his case file transferred to the Director of Public Prosecutions in the state for necessary advice.
The matter was adjourned till January 29, 2020, for the report of compliance.
