The Minister of Water Resources, Suleiman Adamu , the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Ogun-Oshun River Basin Development Authority, Abeokuta, Mr Olufemi Odumosu, among others on Wednesday, eulogised the late director of PUNCH Nigeria Limited, Dr Lekan Are.
The minister was represented by the acting Director, Department of Immigration and Drainage, Ministry of Water Resources, Mrs Esther Oluniyi, at the commendation service held at the conference hall, O-ORBDA Headquarters, Alabata, Abeokuta.
Adamu, in his tribute, said the late Are lived an exemplary life and contributed immensely to the water sector in the country.
The minister said the ministry would not forget the impacts of the pioneer General Manager of the authority for his visionary leadership.
Also paying his tribute to the renowned agronomist, Odumosu, the current MD of O-ORBDA, described the demise of Are as a loss of parental affection that he said would continue to be in the hearts of the people.
Odunmosu in his 22-paragraph tribute, recounted Are’s achievements during his lifetime, noting that he would be greatly missed.
Odumosu added, “He constructed and developed the infrastructure of the headquarters, offices of the authority at Abeokuta; these comprised the buildings of the junior/senior staff quarters, the development of Ikeja and Ibadan substations now known as area offices with staff quarters.
“During his tenure as General Manager/CEO, Dr Are also facilitated the construction of Ikere Gorge Dam, the largest in sub-Sahara Africa and ensured the construction and completion of Oyan Dam, which was commissioned by the then President, Shehu Shagari in 1983.
“Dr Are also started various agricultural projects under the authority which are still standing the test of time till today. Such projects include; Itoikin , Sepeteri, Igbojaiye, Oke-Oda, Mokoloki and many others.”
The family members at the commendation service were; son of the deceased, Adedamola, son-in-law, Adenola Igun, his wife Olufunke Are-Igun and Mrs Bolatito Oladoke.
Others were former general managers Tunji Akinniyi, Jide Fatokun and Jimi Omoleke. Others were the chairman of Abeokuta chapter of Government College Ibadan Old Boys Association, Olufemi Adejugba, Prof. Ope Adekunle, Prof.Tunji Adenekan, Prof. Akin Sofoluwe and Dr Tunji Ogunsehinde.
