An unofficial source, a top government official and a close aide to the deceased, said Ogunji complained about not feeling well last Tuesday and later proceeded to a hospital in Aba.
According to the source, on Thursday, the commissioner complained of not feeling well again, stating however that on Friday night, Ogunji started complaining again of headache, while a source said he complained of heart problem.
According to the source, on Sunday morning, he slumped and died.
Ogunji before now was in charge of the Ministry of Urban Renewal before he was redeployed as the Commissioner for Environment where he supervised the demolition of illegal structures in the state.
The late commissioner was also a member of the state Task force on COVID-19 that ensured that Abia residents comply with the protocols.
Ogunji also played a major role in the victory of Governor Okezie Ikpeazu at the April 2015 and 2019 governorship elections as the governor’s agent and actively defended the governor’s victory at the tribunals.
When called for his reaction, the state Commissioner for Information, John Okiyi Kalu, could not be reached.
